Contaminants of emerging concern in the Arctic fjord Kongsfjorden: from glaciers to marine ecosystem
Current climate warming, which is occurring most rapidly in the Arctic regions, is leading to strong alterations in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and hydro-biogeochemical cycles and has favoured a major human presence in these regions. All these aspects affect directly or indirectly the fate, transport and distribution of contaminants within the Arctic environment. In this context, the present study investigates the occurrence and distribution of contaminants of emerging arctic concern, such as old and new-generation pesticides, bisphenol A, 4‐nonylphenol and its mono and di- di-ethoxylated precursors in the Kongsfjorden. The Bayelva River, draining meltwater from the Austre and Vestre Brøggerbreen glaciers and flowing into Kongsfjorden, was also investigated. Here, sampling was performed both before (surface snow) and during the melting period (drainage water).
